TNT Training at Your Site

Train at MicroImages or at Your Site?

We charge less for training at MicroImages because ...

  • The effort required for a week of training at MicroImages’ offices can be split up among several staff members so that each is able to keep up on normal work assignments.

  • The MicroImages staff members get to go home at night and are not giving up their personal time.

  • Staff do not lose a minimum of 2 additional days in preparation and in transit to some other location. Often, this ends up being their personal time on weekends before and after the training.

  • Materials, machines, and a training center are available and set up in MicroImages’ offices.

Nevertheless, with a large group of trainees, you may save money by training at your site.

MicroImages’ fees for training at your site are nominal for a reasonably sized group. Unlike our competitors, our off-site training fees are fixed, not based upon the number of those who attend. Thus, if enough people participate, the cost per attendee is quite low. For example, in a typical situation within the United States, the travel expenses are $1000, and the fee for 4 days of training is $2200, for a total of $3200. If 10 people attend the training, the cost per person is $320, and for 20 people, it is $160 each.

Demo versus hands-on training.

One of the complications in off-site training can be obtaining access to and setting up a suitable training area with equipment. Having participants actually try the core of the myriad of operations in TNTmips may be desirable but not feasible with groups of 10 to 20 people or even larger. Under such circumstances, it may prove to be a logistical headache trying to assemble and set up the requisite number of computers. If this is the case, consider having MicroImages present your local training by demonstration.

One big advantage of training by demonstration is that 2 to 3 times more material can be covered than in the hands-on training mode, even with lots of time for questions. Another advantage is that the forward progress in training by demonstration is not controlled by the slowest member of the group. Historically, training by demonstration has been handicapped by the trainee being unable to see what’s going on. Many companies, including MicroImages, now use a large video projector that makes every step clearly visible to everyone, regardless of the size of the group.

Remember, every member of a demonstration training group will get a TNTlite for personal use after the training. The TNTlite CD includes the entire set of tutorial and application booklets that can be used after the training. The demo training acquaints the attendees with the large spectrum of things they could do in TNTmips, and these booklets are always there later to help refresh the details when they are actually called upon to do that task. Think of it this way: if you know from demo training that TNTmips can do a particular task, then you will have the confidence to set out to do it by trial and error or using the tutorial booklets. However, if the slower, hands-on training does not cover the wider scope of geospatial analysis, then that capability will remain unknown and not utilized.

What works for you?

Which kind of training you choose for your staff will be your decision. Think of a week of demo training as more like a series of lectures with good questions and answers. It will prepare you to recognize that TNTmips can do the task and the general approach to it, but the detailed operation must be learned when each new task faces you. Professional staff who have lots of other things to do and who do not have trouble getting into things on their own will profit from this kind of detailed overview. On the other hand, hands-on training provides more experience in using TNTmips for fewer tasks. It is a good way for those who will be operating TNTmips for others on a routine basis to get off to a good start in the fundamentals of geospatial analysis and how it is implemented in TNTmips and the other TNT products.
