Yucca Mountain, Nevada

Download  YMman3.sim ...

The YMman3 Landscape File incorporates geologic map and cross-section data for part of the Yucca Mountain area in Nevada, USA. The texture layers in the Landscape files present a shaded-relief geologic map of the area. This map was created in the Landscape Builder by overlaying a shaded-relief image of the area with a vector layer with geologic map polygon with partially-transparent fill colors, as well as additional vector layers with geologic contacts and faults. The bedrock geology of the area is dominated by laterally-extensive volcanic tuffs (pyroclastic flow and airfall ash deposits) cut by numerous normal faults. Widespread alluvium and alluvial fan deposits blanket the valley floors.

Two vertical geologic cross-sections reveal details of the subsurface geology. They are included as georeferenced manifold layers, which display in their proper geographic and topographic positions relative to the map data. In order for these cross-sections to be immediately visible from above the terrain, the default shaded geologic map texture was created with the map portion immediately in front of each cross-section masked out. A second map texture can be turned on to fill these "holes" in the map. The cross-sections were captured as rasters from screen displays of a PDF file, then georeferenced with appropriate 3D control points in TNTmips. Each of these cross-sections is planar, with no bends, so each requires only 4 3D control points to define its location and orientation. The white background color of each cross-section is set to be transparent, so that various text labels appear to float above the section.

The Landscape File also has a Startup script that sets the initial viewer position and background color, then exits as soon as any flight control is activated.
