The PDF file format

TNT product Documentation for Acrobat Reader

Some of the files available for download or viewing from MicroImages are the in the Portable Document Format, or .PDF. This is a popular format for distributing documents on the Internet because it allows greater control in formatting and document layout than does HTML, while maintaining a platform-independent solution to formatting.

In order to read documents in this format, you will need special software that is available for free on the Internet, and is also often seen on CD-ROMs that have documents in the PDF format. You can download Adobe Systems' free Acrobat® Reader :

Get Adobe Reader

Viewing PDF Documents on the Web
With Adobe Acrobat® Reader and the most recent version of Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer, you can view PDF files directly in your browser window. When you click on a link whose target is a PDF file, the browser downloads the file in a page-at-a-time fashion. This means that you can start viewing the first page (or pages) while the rest of the pages are being downloaded in the background. If you already have a current browser, you simply need to download Adobe Acrobat Reader (if you don't have it already). It is freely available via Internet download or you can also find it on many CDs distributed with books or software.

What if I just want to download the file?
By default, during a page-at-a-time download, Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0 displays the first page in your browser window, and then continues to download the rest of the PDF file in the background. However, the PDF file is not saved to your disk unless you explicitly save the file. You may want to save PDF files to your local hard drive so you can can peruse them offline. To do this, simply use your browser's "Save As" feature usually located under the "File" in the menu bar after you have the document in your viewing window.
