Topography profoundly influences many physical and biological processes and provides the backdrop for human activities such as construction, transportation, communication, resource management, and recreation. Because of the varied ways in which natural or manmade systems interact with landscapes, computer analysis and modeling of terrain requires a number of specialized software tools.
