Geomashups: Image Web Tilesets from Imagery

You can convert any type of aerial or satellite imagery to a web tileset in TNTmips using the Export Raster Tilesets process. You can also mosaic imagery covering a city, state/province, or country directly to an image web tileset in the Automatic Mosaic process. Geomashups of image tilesets let you present the imagery for public viewing on the web or for controlled-access viewing on your private network.

These geomashups display tilesets created from Landsat imagery published by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) as a series of 32 image maps (PDF files). The images in the PDF files were converted to TIFF files, which were then georeferenced and mosaicked to image web tilesets in TNTmips. The natural color mosaic is derived from Landsat bands 3 (red), 2 (green), and 1 (blue), whereas the false color mosaic is derived from bands 7 (displayed as red), 4 (displayed as green), and 2 (displayed as blue). TNTmips was used by the USGS along with other software to prepare these nationwide series of image maps. Additional information with regard to using these "reconnaissance maps" can be found in the USGS Open File Report associated with each map.

High-Resolution City Orthoimagery: Philadelphia, USA

PhillaOrtho geomashup

This geomashup combines high-resolution orthoimagery of a large urban area with standard base layers in several geobrowsers. The natural color orthoimage of the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, acquired in 2008, has a resolution of 10 centimeters (4 inches). This imagery reveals the urban landscape in fine detail, showing small structural features of buildings, landscaping, and street lane lines. It could provide a detailed visual reference for on-line planning, urban design, or civil engineering applications.

To prepare this example, image files for three city areas were downloaded from Pennsylvania Spatial Data Access and converted in TNTmips into a standard web tileset. This tileset was then selected in the TNTmips Geomashup process to design the mashup's user interface, which is specified in the HTML/Javascript files used by the links to the left.

High-Resolution City Orthoimagery: Kerava-Tuusula, Finland

KeravaOrtho geomashup

An image tileset created from a mosaic of high-resolution (0.3 meter, 1 foot) orthoimages of the nearby cities of Kerava and Tuusula in Finland is shown in this geomashup. Over 600 images were acquired in 2006 by Mr. Hannu Vallas, Lentokuva Vallas Oy. TNTmips was used by Mr. Pentti Ruokokoski, WSP Finland Oy, to georeference and mosaick the images and convert the mosaic to an image web tileset.
