Downloading Binary Files in an Unrecognized Format

Depending on which browser you use, when you click on a link to download a binary file in an "unrecognized" format, your browser may attempt to display the file.

Browsers are getting better at such things, and yours may (should) helpfully offer to let you download and save the unknown file.  But you browser may try to display the unknown file as a text file. This is a waste of time since the browser will be displaying garbage characters.

If you experience this phenomenon, don't worry, it's easy to deal with. Instead of doing a "regular" click on the link, do this:

  • on Windows/UNIX machines right-click on the link to the file.
  • on Macintosh machines, click and hold the mouse button down for a few seconds. If that doesn't do anything, try option-clicking or command-clicking on the link.

A right-button menu should pop up. On that menu, select the option that says "Save Target As..." or "Save Link As..." or some such wording. This should initiate some sort of file saving dialog. Select a target directory for the file. If the browser has any options for selecting the format of the file that you're saving, make sure that it does not save it in text format. If there is no such option, don't worry about it, it should save it properly.

Some of the files downloadable from MicroImages that may cause this problem are listed below:

  • MicroImages Project Files (end with rvc)
  • PageMaker files (end with p65)
  • Archive/compressed files for platforms other than the machine you're using to download the file: (e.g. end with gz, Z, tar, sit, bin, zip, hqx)
  • Windows executable files (if you're not on a Windows machine) (end with exe)
  • UNIX executable files (don't have a particular ending)
  • Macintosh executable files (don't have a particular ending)
